Windows Laptop Parental Controls & Safety Guide

How to set up Microsoft Family Safety parental controls on Windows laptops for children, including web filtering, screen time, and app restrictions.

Overview

Windows laptops are commonly used by children for schoolwork, gaming, and general web browsing. Microsoft Family Safety provides built-in parental controls that cover screen time, web filtering, app restrictions, and activity reporting. These controls work across Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices when your child signs in with a Microsoft account.

Microsoft Family Safety

family.microsoft.com or the Microsoft Family Safety app

Microsoft Family Safety is the central hub for managing your child's Windows experience. It provides web filtering, screen time limits, app restrictions, spending controls, and activity reports.

Web & Search Filters

family.microsoft.com > Child's profile > Content filters > Web and search

Filters web content in Microsoft Edge and Bing search. Note that this filtering only works reliably in Microsoft Edge — consider blocking other browsers for younger children.

App & Game Restrictions

family.microsoft.com > Child's profile > Content filters > Apps and games

Restricts which apps and games your child can use based on PEGI age ratings. You can also block specific apps individually.

Screen Time Limits

family.microsoft.com > Child's profile > Screen time

Controls how long your child can use their Windows device each day and during which hours. You can set different schedules for weekdays and weekends.
