Home Fire Safety with Children

Working smoke alarms, a practised escape plan, and a few bedtime habits are what protect a family from fire. Practical UK home fire safety for parents.

ภาพรวม

Most fatal house fires happen at night, and working smoke alarms give a family the seconds they need to get out. Fire safety for children is about three things: early warning, a rehearsed escape, and habits that stop fires starting — including how and where devices are charged.

วิธีการทำงาน

Fires spread and fill a home with smoke far faster than people expect, and smoke — not flames — is what usually overcomes people in their sleep. Common causes in family homes include kitchen cooking, overloaded sockets and extension leads, and lithium batteries in phones, tablets, and e-scooters charging on beds or sofas. Children may also be curious about matches, lighters, and candles.

ขั้นตอนการป้องกัน

1. Fit and test smoke alarms

Have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home, and test them weekly. Most fire and rescue services offer a free Home Fire Safety Visit and can fit alarms for households at higher risk.

2. Make and practise an escape plan

Agree the quickest way out, a back-up route, and where to meet outside. Practise it with your children so it is familiar. The rule is simple: get out, stay out, and call 999 — never go back in for belongings or pets.

3. Build safe bedtime and charging habits

At night, close inside doors to slow smoke, switch off and unplug what you can, and never charge phones, tablets, or e-scooters on beds or sofas or overnight unattended. Use only the manufacturer's charger.
