Guide to setting up parental controls on MacBook using Screen Time and Family Sharing, including web filtering and app restrictions.
MacBooks running macOS are used by older children and teenagers for schoolwork, creative projects, and general browsing. Apple's Screen Time on macOS provides the same family of controls available on iPhone and iPad, including content restrictions, app limits, and web filtering. When combined with Family Sharing, parents can manage settings remotely.
Screen Time on macOS
System Settings > Screen Time (managed via Family Sharing on parent's device)
Screen Time on macOS mirrors the controls available on iPhone and iPad, including Downtime, App Limits, Communication Limits, and Content & Privacy Restrictions.
Web Content Restrictions
System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > Content Restrictions > Web Content
Filters web content in Safari. For comprehensive filtering, consider also restricting the installation of third-party browsers.
App Store and Software Restrictions
System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > App Store, Allowed Apps
Prevents installation of software downloaded from the internet, limiting your child to the curated Mac App Store where content ratings are enforced.
