What is the difference between a Discord server and DMs?

A server is a group space, usually themed (gaming, school, hobby), with channels for different topics. DMs are direct private messages between two users, separate from any server. Most groomers contact children in a public server then push to DMs because DMs are unmonitored by server moderators. Locking DMs to friends only is the single most useful setting.

Are private school-friend servers safe?

Largely yes — they are essentially a group chat. The risks are the same as any group chat (bullying, screenshots leaked, late-night drama) rather than stranger contact. Treat it the same as a WhatsApp group: no phones in bedrooms overnight, no joining new servers without a chat with you.

What about voice chat on Discord?

Voice chat in a school-friend server is usually fine. Voice chat in a public server with strangers is where children most often hear sexual or extreme content, including unsolicited audio. For under-16s, restrict voice chat to known friend servers only and have headphones-out-in-shared-spaces as a rule if you want to overhear.

Your child is probably asking because a friend group has set up a private server, or because a public community they follow is on Discord. The minimum age is 13.

Default settings are not tight enough for a young teen.
