Practical preparation for the first time your child walks or cycles to and from school without an adult.
Your child is ready — or asking — to walk, scoot, or cycle to school on their own, or with a friend. In the UK there is no minimum legal age for this; the NSPCC suggests waiting until around 8 at the earliest, and only when the child can handle the route confidently. The decision depends less on age and more on the route, the child, and the plan you have agreed.
The actual risk of stranger abduction is very low. The realistic risks are road traffic, getting lost, being approached or filmed by other children or teenagers, and panicking if something unexpected happens (lost bag, missed bus, locked gate). A walked-through plan handles almost all of these.
Walk the route together at least three times, in both directions, at the actual school times. Note crossings, busy roads, and any quiet stretches.
Identify safe stops along the route — shops they know, a friend's house, the school office — where they can go if something goes wrong.
Agree exact times: when they leave, when they should arrive, when they should be home. Decide what they do if they are running late (text you).
Sort a phone or tracker. A basic phone, an Apple Watch with Family Setup, or an AirTag in the bag is enough for most younger children — a full smartphone is not required.
Practise what they say if a stranger talks to them ("No thank you" and keep walking), and what they do if a stranger follows or tries to lead them away (go into the nearest shop and ask for help).

If your child does not arrive when expected, call the school first to check they are not already inside. If they are missing, retrace the route immediately and call 999 — police treat missing children as high priority and you will not be wasting their time. If a stranger has approached your child, report to 101 with as much detail as possible (description, vehicle, time, location). For repeated incidents on the same route, contact the school's safeguarding lead.
