KCSIE Part 1 — Staff Summary

All school staff must read Part 1 of Keeping Children Safe in Education each academic year. This summary highlights the key points — it does not replace reading the full document.

What KCSIE Requires of All Staff

Be aware of the indicators of abuse and neglect

Know how to report a concern — who your DSL is and how to contact them

Understand that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility — not just the DSL's

Not investigate concerns yourself — report and record

Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times

Types of Abuse to Recognise

Physical abuse: hitting, shaking, burning, or other deliberate harm

Emotional abuse: persistent emotional maltreatment — threats, humiliation, rejection

Sexual abuse: any sexual activity with a child; includes online sexual exploitation

Neglect: persistent failure to meet basic physical or psychological needs

Child criminal exploitation (CCE): coercion into criminal activity (e.g. county lines)

Child sexual exploitation (CSE): sexual activity in exchange for something (gifts, affection, drugs)

What to Do if a Child Discloses

Listen calmly — do not express shock or disbelief

Do not promise to keep it a secret — explain you may need to share with someone who can help

Ask open, not leading, questions if you need to clarify — "Can you tell me more about that?"

Report to DSL immediately — do not delay until end of day

Record in writing as soon as possible using the child's own words
