Accessibility Statement
We are committed to making Safe Child Guide accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of ability or technology.
Our commitment
Safe Child Guide is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all users, including people with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard.
Accessibility is an ongoing effort. We continuously review and improve our site to ensure that everyone can access the child safety information they need.
What we do to ensure accessibility
- Use semantic HTML to provide clear document structure and meaningful content hierarchy.
- Ensure all interactive elements are fully keyboard accessible, including navigation, accordions, and form controls.
- Maintain colour contrast ratios that meet or exceed WCAG 2.1 AA requirements (minimum 4.5:1 for normal text).
- Provide descriptive alt text for all meaningful images and icons.
- Use ARIA labels and roles where necessary to improve screen reader compatibility.
- Design responsive layouts that work well across devices, screen sizes, and zoom levels up to 200%.
- Ensure visible focus indicators on all interactive elements for keyboard and switch access users.
Testing methods
We test accessibility using a combination of automated and manual methods:
- Automated testing using Lighthouse, axe DevTools, and WAVE to identify common accessibility issues.
- Keyboard navigation testing to ensure all features can be accessed without a mouse.
- Screen reader testing with NVDA and VoiceOver to verify content is read correctly and in a logical order.
- Manual colour contrast checks using the WebAIM Contrast Checker for custom colour combinations.
Known limitations
While we strive for full compliance, the following limitations are known:
- Some older PDF downloads may not be fully screen reader compatible. We are working to replace these with accessible HTML versions.
- Third-party embedded content (such as external video players) may not meet our accessibility standards. We select providers with strong accessibility records wherever possible.
