What Changed
Microsoft says an updated version of the Copilot app for web, desktop and mobile has been available since 18 August 2026, and that its older help article on young people and age limits applies only to the older version. Copilot's terms, effective 18 August 2026, say you must be logged in with a Microsoft account and old enough, at least 13 but sometimes older depending on your country's laws, and that Microsoft might turn off or limit some features for under-18s for legal or safety reasons. Microsoft's page for young people says Copilot doesn't personalise results based on conversation history or show personalised ads, although a young person may still see ads based on what they ask about in a chat. Parents can use Microsoft Family Safety or device settings to block Copilot, set limits on when it can be used and choose which features, such as image generation, voice mode, group chat or AI companions, are available.
What to Review
- •Check whether your child is part of your Microsoft family group, because Microsoft says some of these controls need that.
Parent Actions
- 1Use Microsoft Family Safety or your child's device settings to decide whether Copilot is available to them and which features are switched on.
