What Changed

Meta said on 16 July 2026 that alerts are live for parents using Instagram parental supervision in the US, UK, Australia and Canada if their teen's Meta AI chat suggests a risk of suicide or self-harm, and that they will be available to supervising parents globally by the end of the year. Meta says flagged chats are manually reviewed before an alert is sent. An update dated 29 October 2026 says Meta is rolling out the alerts for teens' Meta AI conversations on Facebook and Messenger, as well as for their searches on Facebook. Teen Accounts are automatically placed in a 13+ content setting that also applies to Meta AI, which is designed to give age-appropriate responses and not comply with sensitive prompts; in the stricter Limited Content setting, Meta AI declines a broader range of prompts.

What to Review

  • •Check that supervision is set up on your teen's account, since the alerts only go to parents who use Meta's supervision tools.

Parent Actions

  1. 1Talk to your teen about what the alerts are for, so they understand why supervision is switched on.
  2. 2Decide whether the default 13+ setting or the stricter Limited Content setting suits your teen.
