Roblox Expanding Features for Age-Verified 13+ Accounts

Roblox is rolling out expanded social features and unrestricted chat to users aged 13 and over who have completed age verification.

What Changed

Roblox has announced an expansion of features available to accounts where the user has completed age verification and is confirmed to be 13 or older. These expanded features include access to a wider range of social interactions, expanded friend discovery, and unrestricted text chat (as opposed to the filtered safe chat available to unverified accounts). Roblox uses a third-party age verification system for this purpose. Concerns have been raised about the reliability of the verification process and the possibility that younger users may attempt to complete verification using a parent's or older sibling's identity documents.

What to Review

  • Check whether your child has completed age verification on Roblox — go to account settings and look for the verification status.
  • Review the chat settings on your child's Roblox account to confirm whether they are on filtered safe chat or unrestricted chat.
  • Confirm that your child's date of birth on their Roblox account is accurate — the features available are determined by the registered age.

Parent Actions

  1. 1Go to Roblox account settings and check the privacy and chat settings currently active on your child's account.
  2. 2Enable Roblox Account Restrictions if your child is under 13 — this limits chat to a safe-word list and restricts access to a curated set of age-appropriate games.
  3. 3Discuss with your child why they should not attempt to verify using another person's identity, and what the expanded features mean in practice.
