What Changed
On 8 September 2026 Snap said more than one million UK Snapchatters have now been confirmed as over 18 through its rollout of highly effective age assurance, with the UK the first market for this approach. Snap says age can be determined in the background and that, where it cannot do so with enough confidence, it may ask a Snapchatter to complete an additional Ofcom-approved age assurance method. It is also rolling out a notice for UK Snapchatters under 18 when they join a group chat that includes someone who is not their Snapchat friend, which lets them open the chat, go back or learn more.
What to Review
- •If your child is asked to complete an age check, look at what they are being asked to do together, and make sure they use their real age.
- •Look at who is on your child's friends list and who is in their group chats.
Parent Actions
- 1Explain what the group chat notice means: someone in the chat is not on their friends list, and they can go back instead of opening it.
