Apple Watch Parental Controls & Safety Guide

How to use Apple Watch Family Setup to manage communication limits, location sharing, and contacts for your child.

The Apple Watch with Family Setup allows children to have their own Apple Watch without needing an iPhone. It provides communication (calls and messages), location sharing, and health features in a controlled environment. For parents who want their child to be contactable without giving them a smartphone, the Apple Watch can be a practical alternative with built-in safety features.

Recommended age: 10+

Main risks

  • Over-reliance on location tracking creating a false sense of security
  • Receiving calls or messages from unknown numbers if contacts are not restricted
  • Children feeling surveilled, which can damage trust
  • Limited screen means notifications and messages may be missed

Initial setup steps

1

Set up Family Setup on a compatible Apple Watch

Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap 'Set Up for a Family Member', and follow the prompts. You will need to create or use an existing child Apple ID through Family Sharing.

2

Configure approved contacts

Add family members and trusted contacts to your child's contact list. Enable Communication Limits so your child can only call and message approved contacts.

3

Enable location sharing

In the Find My app, ensure your child's watch is visible. Discuss location sharing openly with your child — explain that it is for safety, not surveillance.

4

Set up Schooltime and Downtime

Configure Schooltime to limit watch functionality during school hours. Set Downtime through Screen Time to restrict the watch during bedtime.

Parental control settings

Family Setup

Location: Watch app on parent's iPhone > My Watch > Family Setup

Recommended: Fully configured with child's Apple ID

Family Setup allows your child to use an Apple Watch without their own iPhone. It gives you control over contacts, apps, and features.

Communication Limits

Location: Watch app > My Watch > Screen Time > Communication Limits

Recommended: Contacts Only during allowed hours and downtime

Restricts who your child can call and message to approved contacts, preventing communication with unknown numbers.

Location Sharing

Location: Find My app on parent's iPhone

Recommended: Enabled for parent visibility

Allows you to see your child's location through the Find My app. Useful for safety, but discuss it openly with your child to maintain trust.

Schooltime Mode

Location: Watch app > My Watch > Schooltime

Recommended: Enabled during school hours

Restricts the watch to showing only the time and a limited set of apps during school hours, reducing distractions.

Age recommendations

Ages 7-10

A good alternative to a smartphone for children who need to be contactable. Restrict contacts to family members and close trusted adults only.

Ages 11-13

Suitable as a communication and safety device. Expand the contact list as appropriate and use Schooltime mode during school hours.

Ages 14-17

Some teenagers may prefer a phone by this age. If using an Apple Watch, most restrictions can be relaxed while maintaining location sharing by mutual agreement.
