iPad Parental Controls & Safety Guide
How to set up parental controls on iPad for children, covering Screen Time, content restrictions, and safe browsing.
The iPad is a popular device for children of all ages, used for education, entertainment, and creative activities. Apple's Screen Time and Content & Privacy Restrictions offer the same comprehensive controls as iPhone. The larger screen makes it particularly appealing to younger children, so proper setup is essential from the start.
Main risks
- • Extended screen time due to the engaging, large-screen experience
- • Unmonitored YouTube and streaming app usage
- • In-app purchases in games designed to encourage spending
- • Unrestricted web browsing and access to social media
Initial setup steps
Set up with your child's Apple ID via Family Sharing
During initial iPad setup, sign in with your child's Apple ID (created through Family Sharing). This links the device to your family group and enables Ask to Buy automatically.
Enable Screen Time with a parental passcode
Go to Settings > Screen Time > Turn On Screen Time. Select 'This is My Child's iPad' and set a Screen Time passcode that only you know.
Restrict content and enable web filtering
Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Enable restrictions, set content ratings appropriate for your child's age, and configure web content filtering under Content Restrictions > Web Content.
Configure Downtime and App Limits
Set Downtime hours for bedtime and school time. Add App Limits for categories like Games and Entertainment. Ensure educational apps are marked as 'Always Allowed' so they remain accessible during Downtime.
Parental control settings
Guided Access
Location: Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access
Recommended: Enabled for younger children to lock them into a single app
Guided Access restricts the iPad to a single app and lets you control which features are available. Ideal for young children who should only use specific educational apps.
Content & Privacy Restrictions
Location: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions
Recommended: Enabled with age-appropriate content ratings and 'Allowed Websites Only' for young children
Controls what content your child can access, including web content, app ratings, and media. For children under 10, 'Allowed Websites Only' provides the strictest web filtering.
Ask to Buy
Location: Automatically enabled through Family Sharing for children under 13
Recommended: Keep enabled for all children
Sends you a notification whenever your child tries to download an app or make a purchase, requiring your approval before the transaction completes.
App Limits
Location: Settings > Screen Time > App Limits
Recommended: Set daily limits for entertainment and game categories
Allows you to set time allowances for specific apps or app categories. When the limit is reached, the app is blocked until the next day.
Age recommendations
Use Guided Access to lock the iPad to a single approved app at a time. Enable 'Allowed Websites Only' and strictly limit screen time to 1 hour per day.
Allow a small selection of approved apps with App Limits in place. Use 'Limit Adult Websites' filtering and enable Ask to Buy. Supervise use where possible.
Expand app access with ongoing oversight. Maintain content restrictions and screen time limits. Discuss online safety regularly as your child begins using more social and communication apps.
