How to set content lock, age verification and spend caps on EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile and Smarty.
Mobile Network is the mobile provider that supplies your child's phone signal and data, and which usually offers free network-level content filters and adult-content bars on request.
Every UK mobile network operates a content lock — a free, network-level filter that blocks 18-rated material on a SIM. This applies regardless of which Wi-Fi or app the device is using, making it the only filter that survives when a child turns off home Wi-Fi. Content lock is on by default on most pay-monthly children's accounts and can be added free to PAYG SIMs. Networks also offer monthly spend caps to prevent bill shock and premium SMS blocking to protect against subscription scams.
Sign in to the network's account portal or app (My EE, My O2, My Vodafone, My3, etc) and find the 'content control', 'adult content' or 'restrictions' section. Confirm content lock shows as ON.
In the same portal, set a monthly spend cap. If your child has a fixed allowance plan, set the cap at £0 above their allowance so any unexpected charge is blocked.
Enable bars on premium-rate numbers, premium SMS shortcodes, and (if not needed) international calls and texts. These are free and prevent the most common bill-shock and scam routes.
Use a strong, unique password and turn on two-step verification on the network account. Content lock can be lifted by anyone who can log in and pass age verification, so the account is the lock.
Content lock / age restriction
Location: EE: My EE app > Add-ons | O2: My O2 > Service settings | Vodafone: My Vodafone > Content control | Three: My3 > Adult content control | Tesco Mobile: My Tesco Mobile > Bars & restrictions | Sky Mobile: Sky Mobile app > Settings | Smarty: my.smarty.co.uk
Recommended: Enabled (default for children's accounts; can be added free to any SIM)
Blocks UK-rated 18 content at network level — pornography, gambling, dating, knives, and similar categories — on both mobile data and the network's Wi-Fi hotspots.
Spend cap
Location: Account settings within the network's app or web account
Recommended: Monthly cap set at zero or a small buffer (e.g. £5)
Prevents your child from racking up out-of-allowance charges. Particularly important on contract SIMs where premium services can otherwise be billed.
Premium SMS bar
Location: Network app > Bars & restrictions > Premium rate / shortcode bar
Recommended: Enabled
Blocks charity short codes, competition lines, and subscription scams that bill via the phone bill. Free to enable on all UK networks.
Roaming controls
Location: Network app > Roaming settings
Recommended: Roaming off by default; switched on only when needed for trips
Stops accidental data use abroad and ensures UK filters are not silently bypassed in countries with different content rules.
Content lock, spend cap and premium-rate bars are essential. Most children at this age are on PAYG or family SIMs — confirm settings on each.
All controls still appropriate. Talk through what content lock blocks and why it is on, rather than presenting it as a secret.
Content lock remains until 18 by default. Some teens may push for it to be lifted; the BBFC age-verification process is required, and lifting it is a deliberate parental decision rather than a quick app toggle.
