Windows PC Parental Controls & Safety Guide
How to set up Microsoft Family Safety and parental controls on a Windows PC to keep children safe while using a desktop or laptop computer.
Windows PCs are used by children of all ages for schoolwork, gaming, and entertainment. Microsoft Family Safety, built into Windows 10 and Windows 11, provides comprehensive parental controls including screen time management, content filtering, activity reporting, and spending limits — all managed remotely through the Family Safety app or account.microsoft.com.
Main risks
- • Unrestricted access to the internet via multiple browsers
- • Installation of software and games without parental knowledge
- • Exposure to inappropriate content through search engines and video platforms
- • Excessive gaming and screen time affecting sleep and schoolwork
Initial setup steps
Create a Microsoft account for your child
Visit account.microsoft.com and sign in with your own Microsoft account. Go to 'Your family' and select 'Add a family member'. Choose 'Create an account for a child' and follow the prompts. Children under 13 require a parent to complete the setup.
Set up the child account on the Windows PC
On the PC, go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users and sign in with your child's Microsoft account. Ensure the account type is set to 'Standard user', not 'Administrator'.
Configure screen time and content filters
Download the Microsoft Family Safety app on your own phone. Open it and select your child's account. Set daily screen time limits for Windows and enable web content filtering at an appropriate level for your child's age.
Restrict app and game installation
In the Family Safety app, go to your child's profile and select 'Apps and games'. Set the age rating for allowed apps and toggle on 'Require organiser approval for purchases' to prevent your child downloading paid apps without permission.
Parental control settings
Microsoft Family Safety
Location: Download the Microsoft Family Safety app, or manage at account.microsoft.com/family
Recommended: Fully configured with your child added as a family member
Microsoft Family Safety is the central hub for all parental controls. It lets you set screen time limits, filter web content, approve or block apps, and view activity reports across Windows, Xbox, and Android devices linked to your child's Microsoft account.
Child Account Type
Location: Settings > Accounts > Family & other users > Add a family member
Recommended: Create a child account — do not use an administrator account for children
A child account has limited permissions and is linked to Family Safety. An administrator account bypasses parental controls and allows software installation. Always set up a standard or child account for your child.
Screen Time Limits
Location: Microsoft Family Safety app > Screen time
Recommended: Set daily limits and a bedtime schedule for Windows
Restricts total daily device usage and locks the device outside approved hours. Limits can be set differently for weekdays and weekends.
Web Filtering in Microsoft Edge
Location: Microsoft Family Safety app > Content filters > Web browsing
Recommended: Enable content filtering and select appropriate age level
Filters inappropriate websites across Microsoft Edge. For children under 13, use 'Only allow websites on the allowed list' for the strictest control. Note that filtering applies to Edge only — block other browsers from being installed.
Age recommendations
Use 'Allowed websites only' web filtering mode. Block installation of new software. Set a short daily screen time limit and disable social media access entirely.
Enable standard content filtering. Set screen time limits that allow for homework while restricting entertainment use. Require approval for all app installs.
Gradually relax content filtering as your teenager demonstrates maturity. Maintain bedtime screen time limits and activity reporting so you can have informed conversations about usage.
