Xbox Parental Controls & Safety Guide

How to set up parental controls on Xbox consoles (Series X|S and Xbox One) using Microsoft Family Safety for child-safe gaming.

Xbox consoles (Series X|S and Xbox One) are popular gaming devices that also serve as entertainment hubs with streaming apps, web browsing, and social features. Microsoft Family Safety provides unified parental controls that work across Xbox and Windows devices. Parents can manage game ratings, online communication, screen time, and spending through a single dashboard.

Recommended age: 7+

Main risks

  • Playing age-inappropriate games with violent or mature content
  • Voice and text chat with strangers during online multiplayer sessions
  • Spending real money on in-game purchases and microtransactions
  • Accessing adult content through the built-in web browser or streaming apps

Initial setup steps

1

Create a child Microsoft account and add to your family

Visit family.microsoft.com and sign in. Click 'Add a family member' and create a child account (or add an existing one). This enables parental controls across Xbox and Windows.

2

Sign your child into the Xbox

On the Xbox, go to Settings > Account > Add new. Sign in with your child's Microsoft account. The Family Safety restrictions you configured will apply automatically.

3

Configure content and online safety

On family.microsoft.com, select your child's profile. Set PEGI age rating limits under Content filters. Under Xbox online safety, configure communication, multiplayer, and content sharing permissions appropriate for your child's age.

4

Set screen time and spending limits

Configure screen time limits for the Xbox under your child's profile. Set up spending controls to require your approval for purchases or add a specific monthly allowance.

Content Restrictions (PEGI Ratings)

Location: family.microsoft.com > Child's profile > Content filters > Apps and games

Online Safety (Communication & Multiplayer)

Location: family.microsoft.com > Child's profile > Xbox online safety

Recommended: Block communication with everyone except friends for younger children

Controls who your child can communicate with via text, voice, and video on Xbox Live. You can restrict multiplayer access and block user-generated content.

Spending Controls

Location: family.microsoft.com > Child's profile > Spending

Recommended: Require parental approval for all purchases or add a fixed allowance

Controls your child's ability to make purchases on the Microsoft Store. You can require approval for every purchase or give them a set balance to manage.

Age recommendations
