Online Challenges and Dares

A child-friendly guide to online challenges and dares — which ones are just fun, which can be dangerous, and why you never have to do a dare.

You never have to do a dare or challenge. If it could be dangerous or feels wrong, say no and check with a grown-up.

Online challenges are everywhere — dances, funny videos, and games that lots of people try. Most are just harmless fun. But sometimes a 'challenge' or 'dare' can be dangerous or make you feel scared or pressured. Here is how to tell the difference and stay safe.

Most challenges are fun — but not all of them

Lots of online challenges are silly, creative, and totally fine, like a dance or drawing challenge. But a few dares ask people to do things that could hurt them, get them in trouble, or make them feel bad. A challenge is never worth doing if it could be dangerous or unkind — no matter how many people are doing it.

You never HAVE to do a dare

Nobody can make you do a challenge or dare — not friends, not strangers, not a video. If something feels risky, scary, or wrong in your tummy, that is your body telling you to stop. Saying 'no thanks' is always allowed, even if other people are joining in. Real friends will not make you do something that could hurt you.

Check with a grown-up if you are not sure

If you see a challenge and you are not sure whether it is safe, ask a parent, carer, or teacher before trying it. And if a challenge ever makes you feel worried, or someone pressures you to do one, tell a grown-up you trust. They can help you figure out what to do.
