In plain English
Someone who allows their bank account to be used to transfer illegally obtained money. Teenagers are increasingly recruited for this through social media. It is a criminal offence.
Why it matters
Money-muling is a form of child criminal exploitation. Recruiters often promise easy cash for using an account. Convictions can result in a frozen account, loss of access to banking for years, and a criminal record that affects employment.
What to do
Parents and carers
Talk to your teen about offers to receive and forward money. Cifas runs the Don\'t Be Fooled campaign with clear warning signs.
Teens
If someone asks to use your bank account for any reason, say no and tell a trusted adult. There is no safe version of this offer.
