How to Check Browsing History on Any Device
Step-by-step instructions for every major browser and device — plus what private browsing actually hides and what it does not.
Before you start: what you will and will not see
Browsing history shows websites visited in the standard browser window. It does not show: anything accessed in private or incognito mode (see below), activity on apps (social media apps, games, messaging apps all operate separately from the browser), or activity on other devices signed in to the same account unless sync is enabled. For a complete picture of your child's online activity, you will need to check the browser, their Google or Apple account activity, and individual app histories. This guide covers all of these.
Checking browser history on desktop and laptop
Google Chrome
- 1. Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner.
- 2. Select History, then History again from the submenu.
- 3. Alternatively, press Ctrl + H (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Y (Mac).
- 4. You will see a list of recently visited pages with timestamps. Use the search bar to look for specific terms.
- 5. To see history from all synced devices, look for the option labelled “Tabs from other devices” in the History panel.
Mozilla Firefox
- 1. Open Firefox and click the three-line menu (☰) in the top-right corner.
- 2. Select History, then Manage History.
- 3. Alternatively, press Ctrl + H (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Shift + H (Mac).
- 4. The Library panel shows your full history. Click any date heading to expand visits from that day.
Microsoft Edge
- 1. Open Edge and click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner.
- 2. Select History.
- 3. Alternatively, press Ctrl + H.
- 4. The History panel slides in from the right and shows recent visits. Use the search function to look for specific sites.
Safari (Mac)
- 1. Open Safari and click History in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
- 2. Select Show All History.
- 3. Alternatively, press Cmd + Y.
- 4. History is displayed by date and site. Use the search bar in the top-right to search across all history.
Checking browser history on phones and tablets
iPhone and iPad (Safari)
- 1. Open the Settings app.
- 2. Scroll down and tap Safari.
- 3. Scroll down and tap Advanced, then Website Data to see a list of all sites that have stored data on the device.
- 4. Alternatively, open Safari directly, tap the book icon at the bottom, then tap the clock icon to view recent history.
- 5. If Safari is synced via iCloud, you can view history across all the child's Apple devices. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud to check if Safari sync is on.
Android (Chrome)
- 1. Open Chrome on the Android device.
- 2. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- 3. Tap History.
- 4. Scroll through the list or use the search field to find specific visits.
- 5. If the child's Chrome account is linked to a Google account you manage, you can also view synced history via myactivity.google.com on your own device.
iPad (Chrome, if installed)
- 1. Open Chrome on the iPad.
- 2. Tap the three-dot menu and select History.
- 3. This shows history only for Chrome on that device unless Chrome sync is enabled across devices.
Checking YouTube watch history, Google Activity, and app store downloads
YouTube watch history
- 1. Open YouTube and tap the profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- 2. Go to Your data in YouTube (or on desktop, click the profile > Your data in YouTube).
- 3. Click Manage your YouTube Watch History — this opens Google My Activity filtered to YouTube.
- 4. Alternatively, on the YouTube app, tap Library (bottom bar), then History.
- 5. Note: YouTube Kids has its own separate history accessible through the app's settings.
Google My Activity
- 1. Go to myactivity.google.com and sign in with your child's Google account.
- 2. This shows a comprehensive log of all Google service activity: Search, YouTube, Maps, Chrome (if synced), Assistant, and more.
- 3. You can filter by product, date, or search for specific terms.
- 4. If you manage your child's account through Family Link, you may be able to access some activity data through the Family Link parent app.
App store download history
- Apple (iPhone/iPad): Open the App Store, tap your profile picture in the top-right, then tap Purchased. This shows every app ever downloaded on the account, including deleted ones.
- Google Play (Android): Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Manage apps & device > Manage. Change the filter to “All” instead of “Installed” to see previously downloaded apps.
What private browsing and incognito mode actually hide
Private browsing (called “Incognito” in Chrome, “Private” in Safari and Firefox) is widely misunderstood — including by many children who use it. Here is what it actually does and does not hide:
What private browsing hides
- • Browsing history on that device
- • Cookies and site data from that session
- • Form entries and autofill data
- • Activity from synced accounts (if not signed in)
What private browsing does NOT hide
- • Activity visible to your internet provider (ISP)
- • DNS queries visible to your router
- • Activity logged by websites visited
- • Downloads saved to the device
- • Activity if signed in to a Google/Apple account
Your home router may log DNS queries even in private browsing mode. Some parental control tools (particularly network-level solutions like Circle) can see traffic regardless of private browsing mode. However, router-level DNS logs require technical knowledge to access and interpret — most parents will not find this the most practical approach.
This is practical educational content to support families. For case-specific concerns about a child's safety, contact the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000 or your local safeguarding team.
