Overview
Lemon8 is ByteDance's lifestyle photo-sharing app, launched in the US and UK in 2023. It feels like a cross between Pinterest and Instagram, with a heavy emphasis on aesthetic beauty, wellness, fashion, food, and travel content. The audience crosses over heavily with TikTok and the recommendation feed picks up signals quickly. ByteDance set the minimum age at 13, which is lower than the cultural norm in the UK for image-led social platforms. The app does not currently offer a dedicated under-18 experience or a family pairing tool comparable to TikTok's.
How children use it
Teenagers use Lemon8 to browse and save beauty routines, outfit-of-the-day posts, food recipes, room aesthetics, and travel guides. Many follow creators they already know from TikTok. Some teenagers also create their own posts, learning to retouch, filter, and stage photos to a high commercial standard. Because of the aesthetic emphasis and heavy filter use, body image and self-comparison are central risks.
Main risks
Recommended privacy settings
Private Account
Location: Profile -> Settings -> Privacy -> Private account
Set to: On
Limits who can see your child's posts and saved boards to approved followers only.
Comments
Location: Profile -> Settings -> Privacy -> Comments
Set to: Followers only
Stops strangers commenting on your child's posts. Combined with a private account, this significantly reduces unsolicited contact.
Direct Messages
Location: Profile -> Settings -> Privacy -> Messages
Set to: Followers only or off
Prevents adults from sending messages off the back of a public comment. If your child does not need messaging at all, turn it off.
Personalisation and Ads
Location: Profile -> Settings -> Ads
Set to: Personalised ads off
Reduces data-driven ad targeting. Will not remove sponsored creator posts, which sit in the main feed.
