Overview

TikTok is a short-form video platform where users watch, create, and share clips set to music or audio. Its powerful algorithm quickly learns what content a viewer enjoys, which can lead to extended viewing sessions. The app has over a billion monthly active users worldwide and is one of the most popular platforms among teenagers.

How children use it

Children primarily scroll through the For You feed watching entertaining videos, dance trends, and comedy sketches. Many also create and upload their own content, sometimes sharing personal details without realising the audience size. Older teens may use direct messaging and go live to interact with followers.

Main risks

Recommended privacy settings

Private Account

Location: Profile → Settings and Privacy → Privacy → Private Account

Set to: On

Only approved followers can see your child's videos. This is the single most important setting to enable.

Family Pairing

Location: Profile → Settings and Privacy → Family Pairing

Set to: Linked to parent account

Links your TikTok account to your child's so you can manage their privacy, screen time, and messaging settings remotely.

Restricted Mode

Location: Profile → Settings and Privacy → Content Preferences → Restricted Mode

Set to: On

Filters out content that may not be suitable for younger audiences. Not perfect, but a useful extra layer of protection.

Direct Messages

Location: Profile → Settings and Privacy → Privacy → Direct Messages

Set to: No One (under 16) / Friends Only

Prevents strangers from sending private messages. For under-16s, TikTok now disables DMs by default in many regions.
