Amazon Fire Tablet Parental Controls & Safety Guide
How to set up Amazon Kids+, FreeTime, and content filtering on Amazon Fire tablets to create a safe environment for children.
Amazon Fire tablets are among the most popular children's devices in the UK, largely because of their affordability and the dedicated Amazon Kids+ (formerly FreeTime Unlimited) service. The built-in parental controls are comprehensive and well-designed, offering age-appropriate content filtering, time limits, and educational goal-setting. With proper setup, a Fire tablet can be one of the safest digital devices for younger children.
Main risks
- • Accessing the adult profile if parental PIN is discovered
- • In-app purchases within games and apps
- • Consuming excessive screen time through video content
- • Older children outgrowing Kids+ restrictions and seeking workarounds
Initial setup steps
Create a child profile
Go to Settings > Profiles & Family Library > Add a Child Profile. Enter your child's name and date of birth. The age determines which content filters are applied automatically.
Subscribe to Amazon Kids+ (optional but recommended)
Amazon Kids+ provides access to thousands of age-appropriate apps, books, and videos. Subscribe through the child profile setup or via your Amazon account. Content is curated and regularly reviewed.
Set daily time limits and educational goals
In the child profile settings, configure time limits for total usage, and optionally require educational goals (such as 30 minutes of reading) to be met before games and videos are unlocked.
Set a parental PIN
Go to Settings > Parental Controls and set a strong PIN. This prevents your child from switching to the adult profile or changing settings.
Parental control settings

Recommended: Off for younger children, or curated websites only
The Amazon Kids web browser can be disabled entirely or restricted to a curated list of child-safe websites.
In-App Purchases

Recommended: Disabled
Prevents your child from making purchases within apps or buying additional content without your approval.
Age recommendations
Well suited with Amazon Kids+ enabled, web browser disabled, and time limits set. The curated content library is excellent for this age group.
Suitable with age-appropriate content filters, educational goals enabled, and regular check-ins on which apps and content your child is using.
Suitable, though older children may begin to find Kids+ restrictions limiting. Review content filters periodically and consider gradually expanding access.
