VR Headset Parental Controls & Safety Guide
How to set up parental controls on VR headsets including Meta Quest, covering social boundaries, content restrictions, and motion sickness guidance.
Virtual reality headsets, most commonly the Meta Quest range, provide immersive gaming, social, and educational experiences. The sense of physical presence in VR means that interactions feel more intense than on a flat screen — both positive experiences and negative ones such as harassment or fright. Motion sickness is a genuine health concern for some users, particularly younger children. Parental controls are available but vary between manufacturers, with Meta offering the most comprehensive supervision tools.
Main risks
- • Social interactions with strangers in VR spaces feel more intense and potentially threatening
- • Motion sickness and physical discomfort, particularly in younger or first-time users
- • Difficulty moderating immersive environments where content is experienced rather than viewed
- • In-app purchases across multiple VR stores and applications
Initial setup steps
Create a supervised child account
On Meta Quest, create a child account and link it to your parent account through the Meta Quest app. On other headsets, check manufacturer guidance for child account options.
Configure the parent dashboard
Set up the parent dashboard on your phone. Configure daily time limits, app approval requirements, and content restrictions based on your child's age.
Enable the personal boundary and safety features
Turn on the personal boundary feature so strangers cannot invade your child's virtual space. Show your child how to block and report users in social apps.
Introduce VR gradually to manage motion sickness
Start with short sessions of 15-20 minutes and stationary experiences. Gradually increase duration as your child builds VR tolerance. Stop immediately if they feel dizzy, nauseous, or unwell.
Parental control settings
Parent Dashboard (Meta Quest)
Location: Meta Quest app on parent's phone > Parental Supervision
Recommended: Fully set up and linked to child's account
Allows parents to approve or block apps, set daily time limits, and view what their child is using. Must be linked to the child's Meta account.
Personal Boundary
Location: Quick Settings > Personal Boundary (Meta Quest)
Recommended: On
Creates a virtual buffer zone around the user's avatar in social VR apps, preventing other users from getting uncomfortably close.
Content ratings
Location: Parent Dashboard > Content Restrictions
Recommended: Age-appropriate ratings enabled
Restricts access to VR content based on age ratings. Review available apps and approve only those suitable for your child.
Social features and voice chat
Location: Within individual VR apps > Settings
Recommended: Friends only
Most social VR apps allow you to restrict voice chat and interactions to friends only. Configure this within each app your child uses.
Age recommendations
Most manufacturers recommend against VR for under-13s. If used, strictly limit to short sessions of age-appropriate, non-social content with direct adult supervision.
Suitable with parent dashboard active, personal boundary on, social features restricted to friends, and session length limited. Monitor for motion sickness.
Suitable with parental oversight. Discuss VR social etiquette, blocking and reporting, and healthy usage patterns. Gradually extend autonomy as trust is established.
