Your Child's First VR Headset

A UK pathway for setting up a first VR headset safely, with age limits, social spaces and physical safety.

VR headsets like Meta Quest are usually rated 10 or 13 and above. The official guidance from manufacturers is that they are not for younger children.

The biggest risks are social spaces with strangers, physical injuries, and content far above your child's age. Set the account up correctly from day one.

Readiness signs

Look for these before saying yes

  • Meets the headset manufacturer's minimum age (often 10 or 13).
  • Can take VR breaks without arguing.
  • Aware that VR social spaces include strangers and adults.
  • Understands they can mute, block and report inside VR.
  • Will tell you if something disturbs them in VR.

Set a no-VR-in-bedroom rule for younger users.
