Recognising Warning Signs

Behavioural indicators that a pupil may be experiencing online harm.

Behavioural changes to watch for

Warning signs include sudden withdrawal from friends, reluctance to use devices in front of others (or the opposite — obsessive device use), unexplained gifts or money, changes in mood after using devices, sexualised behaviour or language inappropriate for age, and reluctance to discuss online activity.

Key takeaway

No single sign confirms harm, but a pattern of behavioural changes should always prompt further enquiry.

Contextual awareness

Consider the whole picture. Changes in home circumstances, friendship groups, and school performance may all be connected. Be alert to peer dynamics — online bullying often continues into the school day and vice versa. Trust your professional instincts if something feels wrong.

Key takeaway

Online and offline experiences are interconnected — consider the child's full context, not just their digital behaviour.
