Shared Family Device Safety Guide

How to set up and manage a shared family tablet, laptop, or computer so that every family member — especially children — can use it safely.

Many families share a single tablet, laptop, or desktop computer between adults and children. While this can be a practical and cost-effective approach, it requires careful configuration to ensure children cannot access adult content, personal accounts, or sensitive information. Separate user profiles and robust parental controls are essential for making a shared device safe for everyone.

Recommended age: 5+

Main risks

  • Children accessing adult browsing history, emails, or stored passwords
  • Accidental purchases through saved payment methods on adult accounts
  • Exposure to inappropriate content through unrestricted adult profiles
  • Children sharing the device with friends who may not follow family safety rules

Initial setup steps

1

Create a separate child user profile

On Windows, go to Settings > Accounts > Family and add a child account linked to Microsoft Family Safety. On macOS, go to System Settings > Users & Groups and create a managed account. On a shared iPad, use Screen Time restrictions and Guided Access as a workaround since iPadOS does not support multiple user profiles.

2

Enable content filtering and SafeSearch

On the child profile, enable content filtering through the operating system's family safety tools. Additionally, turn on SafeSearch in Google and Restricted Mode in YouTube. Consider using a filtered DNS service such as CleanBrowsing for network-level protection.

3

Remove saved passwords and payment methods from the child profile

Check all installed browsers on the child profile and clear any saved passwords, autofill data, and payment methods. Disable password saving on the child profile to prevent new credentials from being stored.

4

Set screen time limits and usage schedules

Configure daily screen time limits and permitted hours on the child profile. On Windows, use Microsoft Family Safety. On macOS, use Screen Time. Ensure the device locks or restricts access outside agreed hours, particularly at bedtime.

Parental control settings

Separate User Profiles

Location: Windows: Settings > Accounts > Family | macOS: System Settings > Users & Groups | iPad: Not natively supported — use Screen Time and Guided Access

Recommended: Create a dedicated child profile with restricted permissions

A separate user profile ensures your child cannot access your files, browsing history, emails, or saved passwords. On Windows and macOS, child profiles can be linked to family safety tools for additional control.

Content Filtering

Location: Windows: Microsoft Family Safety | macOS: Screen Time > Content & Privacy | Browser level: SafeSearch settings

Recommended: Enabled on the child profile with age-appropriate restrictions

Content filtering blocks access to adult websites and inappropriate material. Apply this at both the operating system level and within individual browsers for maximum coverage.

App and Software Installation Restrictions

Location: Windows: Microsoft Family Safety > App & Game Limits | macOS: Screen Time > App Limits

Recommended: Require parental approval for all new installations

Prevents children from downloading software, games, or apps without your knowledge and approval. This is especially important on shared devices where adult software may also be installed.

Payment Method Protection

Location: Remove saved payment details from browsers and app stores on the child profile, or require authentication for every purchase

Recommended: No saved payment methods accessible from the child profile

Ensure that your child cannot make purchases — whether in app stores, online shops, or in-game — using payment methods saved on the device. Remove saved cards from browser autofill on shared profiles.

Age recommendations

Ages 5-7

Suitable with a heavily restricted child profile, pre-approved apps only, browser disabled or set to whitelist mode, and all use supervised by an adult in the same room.

Ages 8-10

Suitable with content filtering enabled, SafeSearch on, app installation restricted, and the device kept in a shared family space. Regular check-ins on browsing activity are recommended.

Ages 11-13

Suitable with moderate restrictions. Content filtering should remain active. Begin discussing responsible use and gradually allow more independence as trust is established.
